This is the month of gratitude, thankfulness. I am always excited when Halloween is over and November begins. Maybe it has something to do with Thanksgiving. As the year winds down, the seasons
change, this begins a good time is for reflection, remembering and giving thanks. I thought I would share what
I am grateful for this month here with you. I am grateful to the wonderful group of yoga practitioners I have met through the studio this year.
I find teaching yoga at the studio has been the best gift because of the friendships. Sometimes, after class, a group of us will gather nearby in the village for a light lunch or coffee, to share little pieces of our lives with one another. Underthe umbrellas outside, we soak up the rays of sunshine, while enjoying the fruits of yoga off the mat. My heart observes the beauty of these women supporting one another, and I count myself lucky to be among them.
If you are looking for a new place to try yoga, this studio is unique because there is a natural zen feeling to the space without pretension. There is a wide range of classes to choose from, like sculpt yoga on Monday, Gentle Yoga on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at 9 a.m., Thursday at 10:30 a.m., Sunday at 10 a.m.; yin yoga, primary series 1 & 2 with Karen on Sundays at 11:30 and Tuesday’s at 6:30 p.m. Also, other days with ‘All Levels Flow,’ like with Taylor at 9 a.m. on Friday mornings or Dima on Wednesday at 6 pm. Last but not least, I want to share with you one of my favorite Yoga Sutra’s from the Yoga
Sutras by Patanjali: 1.33
In Sanskrit-Yoga Sutra 1.33
maitri karuna muditopeksanam sukha duhkha punyapunya visayanam bhavanatas citta prasadanam
“By cultivating attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and disregard toward the wicked, the mind-stuff retains its undisturbed calmness.”
This yoga Sutra captures the essence of November. (The Four Immeasurables.)
According to Eastern-Spirituality.com “The Metta Sutta, Gautama Buddha held that cultivation of the four immeasurables has the power to cause the practitioner to be reborn into a “Brahmā realm” (Pāli: Brahmaloka). The meditator is instructed to radiate out to all beings in all directions the mental states of:
- loving-kindness or benevolence
- empathetic joy
After learning about these four emotions, we can soak up the inner meaning of these powerful words and apply to them to our daily lives. Miracles can happen when we allow our guard to drop and a kind caring heart is found instead.
In a world that can be tough, remember to practice The Four Immeasurables, Yoga Sutra 1.33.
