Hi, This is Machel (Ma-shel), one of the weekly teachers that teach yoga at Carlsbad Village Yoga in downtown village of Carlsbad. I remember receiving my first email from Candy earlier this year in May, 2019. I had sent her my yoga resume after being inspired by a rock star teacher named Stacy McCarthy, plus other students in my 300 hour that were busy stacking up hours for their internships and already teaching yoga.
Did you ever see that movie, SABRINA with Audrey Hepburn, William Holden and Humphrey Bogart? In that classic Hollywood film, Audrey Hepburn’s character is shy, a chauffeur’s daughter and watches lavish parties at the estate where she lives high up in a tree, dreaming of attending them one day.
You could compare the last two years of my life to that same feeling. After my son left for college, I felt a bit forlorn, almost as if I had become an observer in my own life. So becoming inspired by yoga students doing rock star things in my 300 hour classes was just what I needed.
My first email from the studio had asked me to teach a 75 minute power yoga class. I showed up the next morning, and taught yoga. I felt right at home immediately. This is the beginning that lead to me cultivating new friendships and finding my groove at the studio. As I reflect back over last summer, I remember practicing my different yoga flows, researching yoga sequences, practicing every night before my class. I fought my little original
fears of self doubt and found my center.
My goal for each class was to have each student walk away feeling excited to do more yoga, breath deeper, plus becoming more mindful of their posture.
Yoga Sutra 111:18 states, “Through sustained focus add meditation on our patterns, habits, and conditioning, we gain knowledge and understanding of our past and how we can change the patterns that aren’t serving us to live more freely and fully.”
Often our thinking has kept us blocked from our own treasures within. T.K.V. Desikachar also stated, “The success of Yoga does not lie in the ability to perform postures but in how it positively changes the way we live our life and our relationships.”
Iyengar also shared this profound quote that I understand now fully: “Yoga does not just change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees.” B.K.S. Iyengar
The real freedom in yoga comes from creating habits, breathing deep, with the realization that just where you are now, is where you should be.
We must try not to compare yourself on the mat in class with others. This is our own personal journey.
This. Is. It.
These last six months feels like I made it down from my own (safety net) tree,
just like Sabrina did in that classic movie.
When Sabrina steps onto the dance floor later in the film with William Holden, she is confident, fully herself, ‘becoming of the world and in the world.’
I am so grateful to Candy, all of the other teachers and students each week at the Carlsbad Village Yoga Studio. Thank you!
Looking for wonderful group of individuals to hang with this holiday season? I hope you stop in and take a class at this amazing yoga studio.
